Goals and Progress

Goals:

  1. Establish a diverse, bi-partisan group of citizens to advocate for clean election alternatives to the current special interest-dominated system
  2. Educate Greensboro citizens on the connections between money and politics and the benefits of public financing
  3. Garner the support of the Greensboro City Council, either by passing a nonbinding resolution requesting local public financing authority, or by having individual council members and the mayor sign statements in support of HB 120, which grants this authority
  4. Pass enabling legislation through the NC General Assembly, in the form of HB 120.

Progress:

  • Held several general public meetings, which have attracted a wide variety of citizens
  • Met with City Council members to educate them on public financing and see where they stand on the issue
  • Raised our profile: were the focus of an opinion piece and a front page article in the News & Record, made an appearance on a radio talk show, and held a successful press conference  in April 2008. We were also awarded the Thomas George Dannelly Award by Common Cause North Carolina in December 2008.
  • Hailed the filing of HB 120, with 31 sponsors and co-sponsors, including 3 of Guilford's own: Rep. Pricey Harrison (a prime sponsor), Rep. Alma Adams (a co-sponsor), and Rep. Earl Jones (a co-sponsor).
  • Lobbied members of the Guilford Delegation of the NC General Assembly to support public financing of campaigns generally, and HB 120 in particular
