About Greensboro Citizens for Clean Elections

In December of 2007 a crowd of activists gathered to discuss the problems of money in Greensboro politics. We noted the long list of problems with our current system and decided it was time to fix it. We resolved to form a nonpartisan, grassroots effort to advance local public financing options. Greensboro Citizens for Clean Elections was born.

Over the past 14 months, our group has continued to grow at the grassroots. We have educated fellow citizens about public financing, held a press conference at City Hall, met with members of the City Council and the Guilford Legislative Delegation, and garnered media recognition for our cause. We've even helped introduce a bill in the North Carolina Legislature, HB 120, that will provide cities like Greensboro the authority to hold clean elections. The legislation, sponsored by our very own Rep. Pricey Harrison (D-Guilford), has good chances of passage this year--an exciting step forward in the fight for fairness in our democratic system!

Greensboro Citizens for Clean Elections is a nonpartisan, grassroots group. We receive assistance and direction from Common Cause North Carolina, an nonpartisan, nonprofit organization working for a more honest, open, and accountable government. Common Cause North Carolina is based in Raleigh and is working, both in the legislature and at the grassroots, to advance local public financing options throughout the state.
